Birth Story: The Long Version
At my OB appointment last Friday, the doctor said he did not want me to go much past my due date because there was glucose in my urine and I gained 6lbs in one week because of excessive swelling. Wednesday was one of the few open days this week, plus it was my Great Grandmother Henry's birthday and my Aunt Debbie Fielder's birthday...so it had to be a great day to have a baby!!
We went to the hospital about 5:30am Wednesday morning. They "hooked me up like a lab rat" (according to Jackson) at 6:10 and started pitocin at 6:20. At 8:40am the doctor broke my water then I had to stay in bed for an hour after that. Once I was able to get out of bed, we walked up and down the hallway for a couple hours to hopefully get things moving faster. At 1:30pm the doctor came back and said I was 5cm dilated. By then I was having pretty strong contractions so I was excited that I had made some progress. When I was in labor with Raelyn, I moved from 4cm to 9cm within an hour, so Jackson warned the nurse that I might move pretty quickly from here on...he was right!! At 2:40pm the nurse let me start pushing, but unfortunately she was in the posterior position. This means that she was looking up at my belly, where normally they are supposed to be looking down at the back. In other words, it hurts a lot more because they aren't in the birth canal like they are supposed to be! I didn't use an epidural or pain medication so I can attest that yes, it did hurt a LOT more (at least compared to my first delivery, also without meds). Miss Reghan came into the word at 3:14pm!!
Reghan was VERY alert after being born! She was awake for 2.5 hours and nursed for an entire hour starting about 30 minutes after she was born! She's already a champ and nursing very well for us. Dr. Sharma, her doctor, checked her out and said she looked perfect. They let us come home just 24 hours after she was born. Jackson was especially grateful to learn that he did not have to sleep in a recliner or an awful fold out bed for one more night!
